Writing Playlist: Horror

Oh, you know what time of year it is. Mm-hmm. If you’re like me, October is the month to let your fright flag fly free. Halloween decorations. Carved pumpkins grinning at passersby. Curling up under a blanket with a cup of hot cider, scaring yourself half to death with literally any Mike Flanagan movie or series, or James Wan’s, or Guillermo del Toro’s.

Or maybe you also like to write horror. Maybe you’re working on something eerie and disquieting, with a delightfully slow burn of dread. Or something gory and squicky, designed to make your reader want to crawl out of their own skin to get away from the words on the page. Sometimes you might need a little boost to help you really get in the mood to write something perfectly awful.

In that case, let me assist your ghastly writing process with a chilling horror playlist to help you build that dread, create that suspense, and put yourself right in your character’s shoes as you put them in the peril of their lives. These tunes will raise the hairs on the back of your neck and make you startle at every sudden noise that breaks in through their insidious melodies.

Enjoy, my ghouls.
